REPORT: Lebanese army arrests IS members involved in Beqaa Sifrin attack
The Lebanese Army arrested on Wednesday members of an Islamic State cell in north Lebanon, days after an attack on a military post in the area.
 
The army's Intelligence Bureau carried out raids in the Minieh-Dinnieh town of Beqaa Sifrin, arresting a number of people suspected of being involved in the attack.
 
Lebanon’s military had been on a manhunt for the gunmen that killed one soldier and wounded another during a Sunday attack on a military post in Bqaa Sifrin.
 
The network’s members were identified as A.W. – who confessed to opening fire at the military post and A.N., Z.Sh., Y.Sh. and W.W.
 
Two rifles – one of which was used in the attack – were seized during the raid.
 
No casualties were reported during the raid.

Unknown gunmen opened fire on Sunday overnight at an army position in in the Beqaa Sifrin town in Dinnieh.

Two soldiers were initially wounded in the shooting, but one of the soldiers had succumbed to his wounds later on.


Areas of northern Lebanon have seen a number of security incidents in recent years, especially near the Syrian border, often in a spillover from the civil war next door.

The army regularly fires on jihadist militants in the border area around the town of Arsal, about 60 km southeast of Tripoli.
