Bassil reiterates rejection to extension, vacuum and 1960 vote law

Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil reiterated on Tuesday his rejection to the extension of the parliament’s mandate, as well as the vacuum and the 1960 vote law.

Bassil’s comments were made following the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting whereby he voiced openness towards various vote laws.”

“We want a vote law that gives apt representation for all Lebanon’s components,” Bassil added.

Lebanese leaders are still struggling to agree on a new vote law in time for a Parliament session scheduled for May 15.

President Michel Aoun postponed in April a parliamentary session where Lebanese MPs were expected to extend their mandates for a third time in a row since 2013.

Parliamentary elections were initially scheduled to be held between May 21 and June 21, yet political deadlock is expected to delay the polls beyond June.
