REPORT: Bassil freezes UNHCR staff residency permits until further notice
Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs Gebran Bassil issued on Friday a decision to freeze the renewal of UNHCR staff residency permits until further notice.

The decision came based on a written report submitted to him by a delegation from the ministry that went to the border town of Arsal and spoke with Syrian refugees.

The delegation said that the UNHCR scared refugees from returning to their homeland through asking them a series of questions.

In the report, the delegation said that the UNHCR told refugees that they will join military service once they return, that it would cut its humanitarian aid and cited bad security situation in Syria.

The decision also came after the ministry sent multiple warnings to the UNHCR Representative in Beirut Mireille Girard who was summoned twice to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in this regard.

Bassil also asked the ministry’s staff to study other escalatory measures that could be adopted against the UNHCR if it insists on adopting the same policy.
