No Americans killed in Pakistan suicide bombing - US embassy
No Americans were killed in a suicide bombing on Monday in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, a U.S. embassy official said, contradicting a regional information minister who said two American consular employees had died.   

"No Americans were killed," said the American official.

A car filled with explosives rammed into a U.S. government vehicle in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on Monday, police said.      

Peshawar is located near Pakistan's semi-autonomous tribal region, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaeda militants in the country. The city has been hit by scores of bombings in recent years, but attacks against American targets are relatively rare because of the extensive security measures taken by the U.S. government.         

The vehicle was attacked after it left the U.S. Consulate in Peshawar and was traveling through an area of the city that hosts various international organizations, including the United Nations, said police officer Pervez Khan, who was part of the security escort for the vehicle as it moved.    

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack, which a police officer said took place near a building occupied by a United Nations agency.          

Pakistan's Taliban, who are close to al-Qaeda, are blamed for many of the suicide bombings across Pakistan, a strategic U.S. ally.
