Mikati: We will not cover facilitators of chaos in public administrations
Prime Minister Najib Mikati reiterated Friday that the government will not be covering any violations regardless of the perpetrator’s rank or job. “When I assume my responsibilities, I assume them with the force of law,” he said.
While chairing the second meeting of the committee charged with following up on politics and anti-corruption agreements signed by the Lebanese state, Mikati said that corruption in Lebanon will be assessed by U.N. institutions next year, adding that the committee’s meeting aims at forming a working group that would be in charge of answering questionnaires sent by the U.N.
“The government set a number of draft laws related to corruption and they were referred to Parliament; we hope that they will be approved soon, before the date of the U.N.’s assessment.”
He stressed that the principle of reward and punishment can only be applied through justice and dignity and by steering away from revenge and maliciousness, adding “any measure taken must be based on founded and accurate information.”
The Premiere said that the government will no longer cover those who facilitate chaos in public administrations and institutions, adding “observers are required to assume their full responsibilities, especially that officials working for them are immunized, which allow them to play their role impartially.”
Mikati concluded that the file of financial irregularities at Beirut port was referred to the Financial Public Prosecution and Central Inspection Board.
