Mikati: Today's rhetoric opens the wounds of the past

Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that parliamentary elections are the key to political stability while the electoral law is the key to safety. “What we hear today deepens the gap between the Lebanese and opens the wounds of the past in terms of division,” he said.      

While sponsoring the launching ceremony of the “Second Educational Development Project” funded by the World Bank at the Grand Serail, Mikati added “we want an electoral law which represents the unity of the Lebanese, not a law which divides them.” Mikati pointed out that any law that is based on the division of the Lebanese according to their sects will revive federalism, which is rejected by the Lebanese.      

“Any breach of the Taif agreement takes us back in time to the pre-Taif phase and it may lead to an even more tumultuous time given the regional turmoil and escalating sectarian tensions,” he said.        

Mikati pointed out that the current debate has become very dangerous and has fueled sectarianism.

The Prime Minister called on all parties to make the choice of reason and rely on their patriotism in their approach towards the electoral law “to preserve Lebanon’s unity, stability and sovereignty.”
