Anti-Morsi protesters clash with riot police in the capital

Egyptian riot police clashed on Friday night with protesters who oppose President Mohammed Morsi.

Police fired tear-gas canisters to disperse the protesters, some of whom threw stones and fire bombs and lit fires on the street.

The opposition accuses Morsi, who was elected in June, and his Muslim Brotherhood party of trying to monopolize power and of using violence against dissenters.

There is also disagreement over a contentious constitution, passed in a nationwide vote late last year, which the opposition wants amended.

The recent protests have left at least 70 people dead in recent weeks.

The president and his backers insist that the opposition's relentless protests calling for reform have hurt the economy and have made implementing changes impossible.

The current cycle of unrest erupted three weeks ago around the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.
