Mufti Qabbani: The unity and prestige of the Sunni's is protected by the Mufti himself

Grand Mufti Mohammad Rachid Qabbani expressed on Friday his reproach regarding the content of the declaration made by Former prime ministers on the 13th of March.             

Mufti Qabbani stressed on the importance of abiding by decree 18/1955 and its amendments as well as law texts that grant the Grand Mufti his power and authority.                         

Qabbani considered in the letter delivered to Prime Minister Najib Mikati that the cabinet’s call for the Higher Islamic Council to convene is not logical since its original and extended mandate has expired.                        

The Grand Mufti stressed that the unity of the Sunni sect is reserved and its prestige is protected by Mufti himself as the religious chief for Muslims and for the Higher Islamic Council.               

Qabbani stressed that holding the elections of the Higher Islamic Council is for the benefit of Muslims and their institutions adding that those corrupting the electoral process should bear the responsibility of repercussions.                   

Mufti Qabbani filed on Thursday a lawsuit before the State Appeal Prosecution in Beirut against an unknown on charges of falsifying the minutes of a session of the Higher Islamic Council that was devoted to the body's mandate extension.                                                     

It is worth mentioning that PM Najib Mikati held a meeting on Wednesday with former premieres whereby they aimed at paving the way for the Higher Islamic Council to continue its work, until the election of a new council, calling on the incumbent council to hold a session, in the presence of all its members.
