Mikati hands over written resignation to President Sleiman

PM Najib Mikati handed over his written resignation to President Michel Sleiman at Baabda Palace on Saturday, after he had declared the government’s resignation on Friday night.

Mikati made his decision after March 8 ministers rejected the extension of the term of ISF Chief Ashraf Rifi and the item pertaining to the formation of the Elections Supervisory Committee during the cabinet session.

In this context, Mikati stressed that he did not inform anyone of his resignation intentions, in order to prevent pressure, noting that the resignation came as a personal decision. He stressed the need to form a rescue cabinet amid the current situation, pointing out that accumulating issues led to his resignation.

For his part, President Michel Sleiman thanked the government for its services and asked it to undertake a caretaking role until a new cabinet is formed.

On another note, citizens removed on Saturday the tents that they previously placed in front the residence of PM Mikati to demand his resignation.

In this framework, MP Mouin Merhebi told LBCI that the tents were removed upon the request of Former PM Fouad Siniora.
