Syrian national injured in attack on Army checkpoint in Arsal

The Army Command issued a statement late Saturday whereby it announced that a Syrian national was injured after he opened fire on an Army checkpoint in the northeastern town of Arsal.

The statement said that “two gunmen, a Syrian and a Lebanese national, riding a motorcycle attempted to attack an Army checkpoint in the region of Wadi Hmayyed-Arsal, noting that the Syrian national opened fire on Lebanese Armed Forces' soldiers".

"The assailant tried to escape but the Lebanese Army opened fire, lightly injuring the Syrian while his accomplice managed to escape," the statement added.

The wounded Syrian was transferred to a local hospital and an investigation was launched in order the reveal the circumstances behind the incident.

The town of Arsal, along with other border regions, have witnessed numerous attacks against the military institution in previous months.

Lebanon is deeply divided along sectarian lines and between supporters and opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
