Charbel says decision taken to thwart all attempts to block airport road

Caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel stressed on Monday that the release of Mohammed Saleh, arrested yesterday by the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau, is at the hands of the General Prosecutor Court of Cassation.

In a question directed at Charbel over the families of the Aazaz hostages who are threatening to block the airport road, he said in an interview with Voice of Lebanon radio that "a decision has been taken to thwart all attempts to block the road," and ruled out that the families will undertake such an action".

Charbel also confirmed that "he was unaware of any attempt to label the Beirut international airport as unsafe," and said: "There are problems in Lebanon but we are in a better state than other neighboring countries".

Eleven Lebanese pilgrims were kidnapped on their way back from Iran by insurgents hoping to use them for a prisoner swap on the 22nd of May. Only two have so far been released.

Their families have vowed to continue their movements until all their loved ones have returned home "safe and sound".

They accuse Ankara of sponsoring the kidnapping and the Lebanese government of inaptness in this regard.
