REPORT: Religious figures call for the prevention of a presidential void

Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Rai called for the formation of a new cabinet, followed by fair and transparent elections based on a new law.

This stance was voiced Monday during the launching of a national campaign for the revival of Lebanon's democratic system where a call for a new government that would be up to par in terms of taking on forthcoming challenges was made.

On another hand, Grand Mufti Sheikh Mohammad Rashid Qabbani said that the danger surrounding Lebanon is quickly subsiding, pointing out that in order to avoid presidential void, the President of the Republic Michel Sleiman needs to expedite the formation of a government that would bring forth the country's salvation.

For his part, Deputy President of the Higher Shiite Council Sheikh Abdel Amir Qabalan stressed that the parliament must convene to settle issues pertaining to the country's constitutional institutions, as well as to pass a new electoral law and to deal with the case of the Syrian refugees.

In turn, Druze spiritual leader Sheikh al-Akl Naim Hassan said that Lebanon is facing a critical phase, calling on all officials to assume their responsibilities and form a new cabinet of national unity. He also called for holding parliamentary sessions in order to avoid further deterioration on the security level.
