Lebanese officials briefed over plans to bury Syria's chemicals in Lebanon

President Michel Sleiman met on Tuesday with caretaker Minister of Environment Nazem Khoury at the Baabda Palace.

Caretaker Minister Khoury briefed President on speculations surrounding the burial of Syria's chemical weapons in Lebanon.

Similarly, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly met with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and said that the UN "is not aware of plans to bury Syria's chemicals in Lebanon."

Media reports emerged on Monday saying that there are international attempts to dump Syria’s chemicals in Lebanon.

The issue reportedly surfaced after Norway rejected the international request to use its territories to dispose Syria’s chemicals.

On another note, Plumbly expressed his concerns over the recurrence of violence in the northern city of Tripoli.

Fighting resumed on Monday in the northern city of Tripoli between gunmen of rival Lebanese sects where at least 12 people have been killed since last week.

The latest round of fighting that began ten days ago in Lebanon's second largest city has also wounded more than 60 people, officials said.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.
