Boycott of Sukleen trucks upheld once again at Naameh landfill

After the failure of negotiations between the Ministry of Interior and the Construction and Development Council from one side, and residents of Al-Naameh and neighboring regions from the other side, residents once again decided to proceed with their sit-in, preventing Sukleen trucks from entering the Al-Naameh landfill.         

Speaking on behalf of the residents, Dr. Ajwad Al-Ayash said suggestions presented by caretaker Interior Minister Marwan Charbel were not serious; stressing that residents will not end their sit-in before the closure of the landfill.                 

On Tuesday, the financial attorney at the Financial General Prosecution, Judge Dany Chebly, held a hearing session for the representatives of the Sukleen company, and summoned another representative to appear for a hearing session next Tuesday.                                                              

On Saturday, January 18, residents and environmental activists launched an open sit-in to protest a recent decision that extends the contract of Sukleen Company at the al-Naameh landfill.                                

An agreement was reached on Sunday evening during a meeting with Prime minister-Designate Tammam Salam in Mseitbeh to reopen al-Naameh road for a period of 48 hours in a bid to reach a solution for the said landfill.                             

The landfill was opened in 1997 following the closure of the Normandy seafront dump in Beirut, and was initially set to operate for only six year.
