MP Jarrah to LBCI: Security situation in Tripoli is first test for new cabinet

Future MP Jamal Jarrah said on Thursday that the security situation in the northern city of Tripoli is the first test for the new cabinet, adding that the political forces are behind the tensed situation in the city.

Jarrah's comments were made during an interview with Nharkom Said TV show in which he called on security apparatuses, the Lebanese army and politicians to seriously deal with the implementation of the security plan in Tripoli, stressing that all hopes are pinned on the security apparatuses in this regard.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

But the city has become increasingly volatile in recent months due to the civil war in neighboring Syria, where the Sunni majority is leading a revolt against President Bashar al-Assad.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances in Tripoli.

These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.
