Former PM Mikati calls on political parties to reach agreement over presidential elections

Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati urged all Lebanese political forces to work on holding the presidential elections before the end of the constitutional deadline set for May 25.

Mikati's statements were made Friday during a launching ceremony for the Electronic Trade conference organized by the Arab Organization for Young Attorneys at Quality Inn hotel in Tripoli.

He also stressed the need to honor constitutional deadlines and reach agreements leading to the election of a new head of state.

On another note, Mikati said he was glad Lebanon's northern city of Tripoli has recovered following several rounds of violence.

"Some local and foreign parties used Tripoli as a mailbox to send political messages," he added.

The port city of Tripoli has long been a stronghold of Sunni Islamists in northern Lebanon.

Disputes from neighboring Syria's civil war frequently inflame sectarian grievances. These clashes pit gunmen from both the mostly Sunni Bab Tabbaneh district and the Jabal Mohsen district which mostly comprises residents of Syrian President Bashar Assad's Alawite sect, a Shiite Islam offshoot.

Calm however has been relatively restored to the city following the implementation of a security plan put forth by cabinet and enforced by the Lebanese Armed Forces and security apparatuses.
