Italian Major General to head UN forces in Lebanon

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed on Monday Major General Luciano Portolano of Italy as the new head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Major General Portolano joined the Italian army in September 1981 and since September 2012 has served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Joint Operations in the Italian Armed Forces.

He will succeed Major General Paolo Serra, also of Italy, who will relinquish his post as Head of Mission and Force Commander of UNIFIL on 24 July.
