LAF unit arrests kinsman of fugitive Salafist cleric Ahmad al-Assir

The Lebanese Armed Forces arrested on Wednesday the cousin of fugitive Salafist Sheikh Ahmad al-Assir over the clashes that took place last year in Sidon's Abra.

The arrestee was identified as Abdel-Rahman Riyad who is currently under interrogation over his involvement in the clashes between the Army and gunmen supporting the hardline Salafist cleric.

The suspect works at the state-run telecoms provider, Ogero.

In June 2013, heavy clashes erupted between the Lebanese Armed Forces and supporters of Sheikh Ahmad Assir, leaving at least 16 soldiers killed and wounding dozens others in Lebanon’s southern city of Sidon.
