Education Minister to teachers: No positive signs in case of pay scale yet
Education Minister Elias Bou Saab stressed Thursday that no progress has yet been seen with regards to the controversial series of ranks and salaries, vowing to continue his efforts in order to resolve the problem.

In a statement he delivered after joining the sit-in held by teachers, Bou Saab reiterated that teachers will abstain from correcting the official exams until their demands are met.

Similarly, the Lebanese University’s professors declared their solidarity with the school teachers, noting that they will not correct the university’s exams before the approval of the pay scale.

The contract teachers have been staging a sit-in at the Lebanese University to follow up on the cabinet session underway at the Grand Serail.

The teachers and the Union Coordination Committee resumed their movements a couple of months ago calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike.

The decision to revive movements came as a result of the failure of the Joint Parliamentary Committees to resolve the dispute on the Value Added Tax in a proposal aimed at securing the funds for the salary scale that was approved by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati's cabinet.

Former PM Mikati's cabinet endorsed the new salary scale for public employees in 2012, ending a long dispute that had triggered several sit-ins and strikes held by the UCC.

President Michel Sleiman signed the decree mid-June 2013 and it was referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committees for further examination, however the law was never passed.
