The head of the Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblatt addressed on Monday the Arab Druze, saying that they have to choose between the narrow sectarian affiliation, which is used by the Syrian regime and aims at creating strife; and the wide Arab and national identity.
In this regard, he stressed that the sectarian identity does not protect the Druze minority in Lebanon, Syria, occupied Palestine and other regions, noting that the Arab identity is what safeguards the sect within its political and geographic presence.
In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa website, MP Jumblatt said that the events taking place in the region of as-Suwayada, a mainly Druze city southwestern Syria, reflect the methods used by the Syrian regime to incite the regions and sects against each other and create strife, in a bid to regain political and security control over various regions across Syria.
“Once the Druze fall in the trap, based on the theory of defending the minorities set up by the regime, they would have given up on their national and historical heritage build on the struggle for a unified Syria,” he stated.
Jumblatt continued by calling on the Druze leaders in Syria to show the highest degrees of responsibility, awareness and rationality in order to reach agreements and reconciliations with the neighbors, “so that this sect will not be used in an absurd war,” as he said.
