Former Minister Salim Jreissati reiterated on Tuesday the Change and Reform Bloc’s rejection to the prolongation of the parliament’s mandate, stressing that the bloc’s policy on this issue remains constant.
Following the bloc’s weekly meeting, Jreissati noted that MP Michel Aoun is still awaiting the responses on his presidential initiative, pointing out that some Lebanese factions consider Aoun’s suggestion as destructive "even though it aims at saving the country."
It is worth noting that the proposal of the Change and Reform Bloc stipulates the division of presidential elections into two rounds.
During the first round only the Christians cast their ballots, adding that the two candidates who receive the majority of the votes will be transferred to the second round where all the Lebanese voters will then proceed to elect the president.
Lebanon has been plunged in a presidential vacuum since the mandate of President Michel Sleiman ended in May.
Lebanese MPs failed to elect his successor after various presidential election sessions following a boycott of the majority of March 8 camp MPs, mainly Hezbollah and the Change and Reform bloc, over an ongoing dispute over a consensual candidate.
