MP Jumblatt calls for reconsidering mandatory military enlistment
Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblatt stated on Monday that Lebanon is carrying a heavy burden in combating terrorism, stressing the necessity of providing Lebanese Armed Forces with the proper military and logistic support.

In his weekly statement to al-Anbaa website, MP Jumblatt said the West should not turn a blind eye towards Lebanon when discussing a plan to combat terrorism.

In addition to this, MP Jumblatt denounced criticism directed against the Lebanese army, emphasizing the importance of supporting the military institution and backing it politically in light of current regional threats.

Jumblatt also hailed Saudi Arabia's one billion dollar grant to the army; however, asked about the three billion dollar grant it had pledged in 2013.

In addition to this, MP Jumblatt called for reconsidering mandatory military enlistment until the needed funds are provided to the army.

In August, Saudi Arabia announced that it would dedicate one billion dollars to the army in a bid to help it combat terrorism.

Last December, former President Michel Sleiman announced that Saudi Arabia had pledged $3 billion to buy weapons from France to help support and strengthen the Lebanese army.
