MP Kanaan: Change and Reform bloc will resort to all legal measures to reject extension of parliament's mandate

Change and Reform bloc MP Ibrahim Kanaan said on Tuesday that linking the presidential vote to the parliamentary polls is "a grave mistake," adding that preparations for parliamentary elections should have started a year and a half ago.

Kanaan's comments were made following the bloc's weekly meeting whereby he noted that the bloc will resort to all legal measures to reject the extension of the parliament's mandate.

Kanaan concluded by calling for drafting a new electoral law that would give apt representation to both Christians and Muslims.

Last August, MP Nicolas Fattouch submitted a draft proposal to Parliament’s Secretariat for the extension of the legislative body’s mandate for two years and seven months, stating that the move was aimed at protecting civil peace.

During a legislative session in May last year, Parliament approved the extension of Parliament’s mandate by 17 months.

Also, the lawmakers failed to elect a new president since the term of President Michel Sleiman ended last May plunging the country into a presidential vacuum.
