PSP leader MP Jumblatt responds to Interior Minister Machnouq: Exercise modesty your excellency

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat slammed the Lebanese authorities on Friday for using excessive force against the families and relatives of Lebanese troops taken hostage by jihadists, urging officials for “modesty.”

Jumblat described the crackdown on the protesters at Beirut's Saifi region as “shameful.”

“It seems that the Lebanese state has lost its temper along with its ability to seriously negotiate for the release of the hostages," he said via his twitter account.

Police used water cannons to disperse the protest held by the relatives of the abducted Lebanese troops, who blocked the Saifi road to demonstrate against the government's failure to secure the release of their loved ones.

The protesters “have only shirts on their chests,” he said, adding “others block roads with their real and fictional security convoys.”

“Get some modesty your excellencies,” he told officials.

It was not clear to whom Jumblat was referring to. But earlier, Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq stressed that blocking the capital's roads will not yield positive results in the matter of the kidnapped troops, noting that he will no longer allow such measures.

"Escalation based on the orders of the kidnappers will only lead to obstruction and chaos," he added.

In a press conference held to address the clash that erupted between the security forces and the reporters in al-Saifi region during the protest of the

Lebanese hostages' relatives, the minister said that hindering the life and work of the Lebanese citizens only serves the interests of the abductors, pointing out that the government is exerting every possible effort to secure the release of the hostages.
