UK’s Fletcher: We are adamant on supporting LAF in the fight against terrorism
British ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher held on Tuesday a meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri with talks featuring high on the latest reports about the “secret” British support to the Lebanese Armed Forces.

“Since 2012, the United Kingdom has been backing LAF regiments on the border to monitor and deter movements by gunmen in border areas,” Fletcher said.

He added that the UK has allocated £ 20 million to build towers along 140 kilometers on the border and to provide supplies for personal protection as well as Land Rover vehicles and monitoring tools.

“We are committed to supporting the Lebanese state, its army and stability in the fight against terrorism and this support is not confidential,” he concluded.

The Telegraph reported on Monday that a British team has secretly saved a Christian town in Lebanon from the advance of Islamic State forces by constructing a network of watchtowers.

The secret British squad worked at speed to coordinate the huge effort to build 12 towers along the border with Syria to prevent the IS fighters from “massacring” inhabitants of the town.

The lookout points allowed the Lebanese army to stop IS from storming west to the Mediterranean at the same time that the terror group invaded Iraq to the east. It cut off the advance of IS fighters into the small Christian town of Ras Baalbek, in the north of Lebanon.

In this regard, Tom Fletcher said he believed the watchtowers had prevented a massacre at Ras Baalbek, which could have led to a catastrophic destabilization of the country, home to Druze, Sunni and Shia Muslims and two million Christians.
