Mufti of the Republic Sheikh Abdel Latif Darian stressed Friday that no excuses can be accepted for the dismantling of the state and the failure to elect a new president.
He pointed out that the current situation is a dangerous sign indicating that justice has not been implemented in Lebanon, stressing the need for the judicial system to remain transparent and impartial in holding criminals accountable.
On another note, Darian called on all the people to express solidarity with the Palestinians and all those who seek to do right and save their nation.
Mufti Darian's comments come in light of a controversial verdict issued earlier in the week against former Information Minister Michel Samaha.
Samaha who was sentenced to four years in prison and stripped of all civil rights will be serving the remaining term of his incarceration for the next 11 months in prison, amounting to a total of years.
Samaha, who had close ties with the Syrian regime, was arrested in August 2012 for plotting attacks in Lebanon along with two Syrian officials.
His trial started in June 2013 but had been repeatedly postponed for failing to summon Ali Mamlouk and a Syrian colonel identified only by his first name, Adnan, the cases of whom were included in Samaha’s trial.
