"Before they raise questions regarding the border town of Arsal, let them ask themselves what they are doing in Syria’s al-Qalamoun region," Future Movement leader MP Saad Hariri said Thursday in reference to Hezbollah's involvement in the battles taking place on the Lebanese-Syrian border. Hariri’s comments were made via his Twitter account whereby he blamed Hezbollah for the infiltration of terrorist groups into the Lebanese territories. “We will not remain silent over the attempts to involve the Lebanese army in battles that only Hezbollah commands,” Hariri added. He concluded by calling on Arsal’s residents to remain vigilant over the calls for sedition and terrorism. The Qalamoun region straddles the Syria-Lebanon border and was considered a stronghold for the Syrian rebel forces until a main operation carried out by the Syrian regime troops and backed by Hezbollah fighters last year. While most of the region was re-controlled, militants and jihadists remain entrenched in the region along the porous border. From there, jihadists have launched attacks inside Lebanon, including last August when fighters from the al-Nusra Front and the Islamic State group briefly controlled Arsal. The Lebanese army frequently clashes with the militants near the Syrian border. The Islamic State, which controls several areas in Syria and Iraq, aims to spread to Lebanon as its fighters position in the outskirts of Bekaa towns bordering Syria and the Lebanese army is in adamant efforts to stop their attempts to infiltrate the country. On Thursday, the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces – Public Relations Division, declared that ISF members dismantled a booby-trapped vehicle in the Arsal town of Rasa al-Sarj, which was loaded with 35 kilograms of explosive materials. In the details, the directorate released a statement whereby it said that “on Wednesday 20-05-2015, members of the ISF positioned in Arsal found a suspicious white “Fiat” vehicle parked next to the Rawda Mosque, at a distance of 100 meters away from the Lebanese army checkpoint in the town of Ras al-Sarj in Arsal.” The statement added that the security forces summoned the Judicial Police expert who inspected the vehicle, which was found to be loaded with explosives. Accordingly, the ISF members cordoned off the area and dismantled the bomb that weighed 35 kilograms.
