Minister Bassil voices rejection to continuous registration of Syrians in Lebanon

Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil stated on Monday that the “United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is still registering displaced Syrians in Lebanon,” voicing his utmost rejection to this matter and calling for respecting the laws and principles of sovereignty.

Minister Bassil stated in a press conference that all Syrian children born in Lebanon have the right to be granted the Syrian nationality.

Bassil emphasized that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is facilitating the process of registration for these nationals as foreigners, stating that the Lebanese position should be based on laws pertaining to registering newborns in Lebanon.

In this context, Minister Bassil noted that the birth certificate should be signed at the hospital and then registered at the department of foreigners at the Ministry of Interior.

“These papers should subsequently be sent to the Syrian Embassy or Foreign Affairs Ministry since Syrian authorities are responsible for registering newborns,” Bassil said.
