Head of private school teachers association Nehme Mahfoud said Saturday that the Union Coordination Committee spent three years protesting in the streets and staging democratic and peaceful movements, expressing his regret that the government turned a blind eye to their demands.
In a statement to LBCI’s Nharkom Said from Beirut’s Martyrs Square, Mahfoud slammed the irresponsible confusion in which the cabinet has been acting; pointing out that the waste crisis has worsened the situation in the country.
He stressed the need that the civil society movements remain peaceful, hoping that they will be fruitful without any political interference.
The Union Coordinating Committee has held continuous strikes, for over three years, calling on the authorities to pass the pay scale, which stipulates a wage hike. No concrete measures thus far been implemented.
With the rise of the influx of Syrian refugees and the already fragile economy, local employees are facing troubles finding work, since Lebanese employers have begun selecting Syrians over Lebanese since they are willing to work for lower salaries.
