58 Roumieh inmates freed after prison term reduction, 100s to follow

After the issuance of the official gazette on Tuesday that included the announcement of the prison term reduction to nine months, several prisoners were set to be released in the coming days. On Tuesday afternoon, nearly 60 inmates were released from Roumieh in the presence of their parents and friends. The others are expected to be released in the next two days.

150 inmates in total will be released in April with subsequent batches of early releases occurring each month. This procedure will partly solve the problem of overcrowding in Roumieh and other prisons.

The prison term reduction law will not be applied to those sentenced to death, those who are serving a life sentence and those who repeated their crime and sentenced to prison again.
