Rai praises Sleiman efforts to strengthen Lebanese state

Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai, while visiting the village of Gherfin in the Byblos district, said “God is standing by the Lebanese President Michel Sleiman as he builds a strong Lebanese community”, on Tuesday.

Rai praised Sleiman’s efforts to strengthen the Lebanese state’s institutions, adding that the president is doing everything in his power to promote reconciliation and understanding.

Rai laid the cornerstone for the Blessed Father Estephan Nehme Church. The ceremony was attended by the President’s representative Nazem Khoury and a number of Christian believers. Afterwards, Patriarch Rai paid tribute to Blessed Father Nehme by visiting his house in Lehfed.
Following his visit to the village of Nabeh Al Gharir, Rai headed two masses that took place under light rain in the presence of political figures, clergymen and Christian believers.
“All parts of Lebanese society should be up to the tasks entrusted to them regardless of the hardships encountered so far”, Rai said.
At the end of his visit to Lehfed, Rai attended a commemorative plaque unveiling ceremony in the Church’s hall.

Beshara Rai became Patriarch for Antioch on March 15, 2011 after his predecessor Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir resigned upon reaching the retirement age of 75.
