Connelly meets Aissami’s family, voices concern over arrests and disappearances in Lebanon
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut announced on Thursday that U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Maura Connelly, met with the family of former Syrian vice-president Chebli El Aissami who was abducted in Lebanon on this day last year, voicing her support to his family.

According to the embassy’s statement, Connelly voiced the U.S.’s concern over the reports on cases of disappearance, arrests and intimidation undertaken by the Syrian regime and its supporters against Syrian nationals in Lebanon. Connelly stressed the necessity to protect refugees, dissidents and opposition figures who reject violence.

Connelly urged the Lebanese government to keep working closely with the international community to address the humanitarian needs of those who fled to Lebanon due to the ongoing violence in Syria.

Connelly reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to maintain a stable, sovereign and independent Lebanon.
