Introduction to the evening news 19-07-2012

Once again the power of veto supersedes that of imposing sanctions on Syria. It was the third time that Russia, a key ally of the Syrian government, and China have used their veto power to block U.N. Security Council resolutions designed to put pressure on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and halt the violence in the 16-month conflict that has killed thousands of people. The UN sanctions against Syria vetoed by the two opposing powers stipulated non military penalties against Assad’s regime should it fail to remove heavy weapons from various cities within ten days.                          

With the fall of such a decision, and as battles in Syria’s capital soar, Syrian refugees by the thousands flock to neighboring Lebanon for shelter.               .                    
This as mystery still shrouds the National Security Building’s attack with no photos or final body count. Amid this obscurity, questions arose around the whereabouts of President Assad, and whether or not he was in the tourist town of Latakia. These questions were not fully put to rest with the broadcast depicting the latter during a swearing-in ceremony of the new Minister of Defense General Jassim al-Freij.                    

In Lebanon, EDL contract workers pay the price for Hezbollah’s swindling memorandum of understanding with the FPM. This as, LAF supporters cut-off more roads, this time in Saksakieh, to protest the arrest of LAF officers involved in the death of Sheikh Ahmad Abdul Wahed and companion Sheikh Mohammad Merheb. In this context, a prominent word was delivered by the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces General Jean KAhwaji, whereby he confirmed that the General Army Command will no no longer remain silent towards verbal or media slanders.                        

In the Islamists file, and in what can be described as the closing factor in this case, Investigative Judge Ghassan Oeidat finally passed his indictments for the Nahr el-Bared case.
