What role does the National Media Council play?

The National Media Council was formed on November 15, 1995 upon the suggestion of former Information Minister Ghazi Aridi.    

According to the council’s guidelines:    

- The council has a renewable mandate of three years    

- It comprises 10 members elected by the cabinet    

-  The council operates under the law related to television and radio broadcasting. The council’s main task lies in monitoring media outlets.   

- It suggests to the information minister measures to be taken against media companies that committed violations.    

- The council convenes once each 15 days.    

In this context, Public Works Minister Ghazi Aridi confirmed to LBCI that media outlets have the right to defend themselves when the state, itself, violates the law.   

Aridi confirmed that the council monitors the news bulletin to see to it that the applicable laws are being respected.   

Several events took place without the least reaction from the council knowing that its mandate has already expired in 2008.
