Hazim to As-Safir: Optimistic about a near end to the crisis

The Patriarch Ignatius IV Hazim of Antioch and all the East said that he is not worried about the presence of Christians in the Middle East, rather he is concerned by the foreign hands that interfere in middle eastern affairs, harming Christians and Muslims alike.  

In an interview with As-Safir daily, Hazim stressed that Christians in Syria have been enjoying freedom of worship in their churches and schools for a long time.

Patriarch Hazim underscored that the Syrian crisis will end soon, saying: “People in Damascus are not the least terrified by the turbulence and we think that day will come when we will thank God that the country is not heading towards the unknown. I think that it would be much easier and safer to walk a bright path, rather than a dark one.”

Hazim said that the Lebanese situation should be studied from the perspective that Lebanon plays a pivotal role in the region, adding that no dangers lurk on Lebanon’s horizon.

Speaking on PM Najib Mikati’s conduct, Hazim said: “I know Mikati very well and I have confidence in his good judgment and professionalism.”

Asked about whether he is satisfied with the representation of the Orthodox sect in Lebanese political institutions, Hazim revealed that there are some shortfalls, saying: “We are on a quest to raise awareness and put ourselves at the service of the country. We also intend to continue our meetings with the ministers and MPs who represent the sect. They have the duty towards the Orthodox sect to recover the administrative posts lost in the past.”
