High tensions continue over Ain Saade and Mansourieh
Amidst tight security measures, the residents and students of Ain Saade and Mansourieh are continuing demonstrations for the third day in a row against the attempts to install high voltage power lines in the populous region.

A statement issued by residents stressed that they will stand their ground until a decision is issued to install the power lines underground. Sister Daniella Harrouk, Superior General of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, appealed to the heads of government and to all officials to go back on their decision.

Sister Harrouk stressed that this popular movement is based on just grounds since it aims at preserving the residents’ health and the region’s environment.

The plan to install high voltage electrical lines in the Metn area seeks to connect a power plant in Mkalles to another in Bsallim.

The controversial plan was fiercely opposed in 2005 by Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) MPs, but FPM Minister Jibran Bassil decided to go through with the plan in 2009 when he was tasked to lead the Energy Ministry.

Bassil argues that the plan does not pose any grave threat on the health of the area’s residents amid fear over potential risks of electromagnetic fields.
