Rai from Chicago: Lebanon cannot withstand Shia-Sunni conflicts
Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai said on Monday that Lebanon cannot withstand Shia-Sunni conflicts and should befriend all Arab states.

“The Lebanese have been held captive by their political orientation since the Lebanese war. But the situation is not the same anymore; therefore we should start to speak the language of communication,” he added.

Rai appealed to the Lebanese politicians from Chicago to discuss the National Pact through dialogue or else they will “miss the train”.

The patriarch addressed U.S. officials saying “We do not want for the U.S. or any other country to only consider us [Christians] as minorities in the Middle East.”

Rai urged the Lebanese diaspora in the U.S. to register their children in Lebanon because the Lebanese system hinges on democracy and the balance between Christians and Muslims.
