Issue of celebratory gunfire needs to be addressed radically: MEA chairman

Mohamad Al-Hout, Chairman and Director General of Middle East Airlines (MEA), has noted that the issue of stray bullets and celebratory gunfire needs to be addressed radically, and the law should be enforced on the shooters.

Al-Hout pointed out in an interview with local media the regard of pigeons and birds surrounding the airport, which pose a threat to navigation, adding that they are waiting for the Minister of Interior to find a solution through the security forces.

MEA chairman's comments were taken after the General Directorate of Internal Security Forces (ISF) announced that celebratory gunfire injured three people in Beirut and Tripoli, and two aircraft were damaged on the Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport runways on New Year's Eve.

Despite the ongoing efforts taken by the Lebanese authorities to banish this "uncivilized and backward scourge," as the ISF previously reported, shooting a firearm into the air in celebration is still culturally accepted.
