REPORT: Salafist cleric Dai al-Islam al Shahhal accuses Syria of fomenting strife

        
During a demonstration in front the al-Siddiq mosque in Tripoli on Monday, Sheikh Mohammad Imam said that scholars are the elite of the society, denouncing the attack against them.          

“We will not be pulled toward strife, but we call on taking severe measures against perpetrators,” Sheikh Imam said.          

For his part, the Salafist cleric Dai al-Islam al Shahhal said that attacks against clerics aim at engaging the country in strife and added that the Syrian regime has been attempting for months to spillover clashes into the Lebanese territories.       

“Double standards in the implementation of security leave our areas in a state of despondency as perpetrators run free. In fact, there is an official state in Lebanon and one of hegemony which aims at exemplifying the 'barbaric Syrian regime'," Dai al-Islam al Shahhal added.         

The Lebanese Armed Forces arrested on Sunday 3 persons involved in attacking the Sunni clerics.       

Subsequently, a number of supporters of the Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya gathered outside the al-Makassed hospital while others cut-off the Corniche Al Mazraa, and Kaskas road to denounce the attack.          

Imam of the Bilal bin Rabbah mosque Sheikh Ahmad Assir along with Interior Minister Marwan Charbel headed to the al-Makassed hospital.         

In this context, Minister Charbel said that attackers do not belong to any political party and mentioned that they are drug addicts who are recognized by security apparatuses.       

For his part Lebanese President Michel Sleiman denounced the attack, calling for swift investigations.        

The attack was not only limited to the 2 Sheikh in al-Khandak al-Ghamik; reports said that 2 other clerics were attacked in the Shiyah area.      

They were identified as Sheikh Omar Imami and Ibrahim Abdul Latif. They were transported to the Shtoura hospital after receiving first aid treatment in a Beirut hospital.
