MP Aoun: Those supporting the 1960 electoral law committed the Al-Jabal crimes

Change and Reform Bloc leader MP Michel Aoun said Tuesday that "the other party" dealt with Christians in Lebanon as though they were “leftovers” following the inking of the Taef Agreement.

Following the Bloc’s weekly meeting held in Rabieh, MP Aoun said that the 2000 electoral law was the most heinous law to govern the elections in Lebanon, adding that it was not amended for the 2005 elections for the sole reason of reaping similar results to previous polls.

“After a long battle in 2009, we were able, by signing the Doha Agreement, to regain some of the Christian seats; however, until now political factions did not agree upon an electoral law that respects the constitution and the national reconciliation charter,” MP Aoun said.

MP Aoun then reiterated the 'validity' of the Orthodox Gathering’s electoral draft law, saying that it respects the representation of all parties in Lebanon. He added, “those who say this draft law affects co-existence while supporting to the 1960 electoral law are those who committed the Al-Jabal crimes,” he said in reference to the National Struggle Front leader MP Walid Jumblatt.

"The Orthodox Gathering’s electoral draft is the only draft law that should be voted for since it was agreed upon during the electoral subcommittee’s meetings."

Aoun then reiterated his stance against the extension of the mandate of any authority or leader.

As for comments targeting Caretaker Energy Minister Gebran Bassil and the book written as a response to “Al ibra' Al Mustahil" (Impossible Exoneration), Aoun said that the image Change and Reform bloc is being targeted.

“I signed today a draft law that stipulates the establishment of a special court for financial crimes, let them vote for it, and we will face the 'other party' at court,” MP Aoun concluded.
