REPORT: Head of the Constitutional Council Sleiman: PSP's appeal to be examined

 
Head of the Constitutional Council, Issam Sleiman, denied on Wednesday in a press conference accusations that members of the body had failed to take decisive stances.

He added that the Council is the "backbone" of the state of law, saying that the Council playsan essential role in legislation.

He clarified that a decision was taken unanimously to postpone the draw to choose new members for the Council.

Sleiman vowed the Council will continue its mission, saying its decisions cannot be revoked for lacking of legality or constitutionality even if they were issued by members whose mandate has ended.

As for the appeal filed by Progressive Socialist Party in regards to the suspension of candidacies, Sleiman said “it is being examined by the Council and a decision will be issued within a deadline of one month.

Jumblatt's National Struggle Front, filed on April 26 an appeal against the suspension of candidacies set by the 1960 law.

President Michel Sleiman signed last month the draft-law suspending the deadline for submitting candidacies for the upcoming parliamentary elections until May 19.

The draft law was referred to the president after being approved by parliament despite the boycott of Jumblatt's bloc.

The draft law calls for setting the deadline for submitting candidacies to three weeks before the date of the elections.
