Russian FM slams unilateral sanctions as EU targets Syrian businesses
On the heels of additional sanctions imposed by the EU on Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was quoted by Reuters as saying that unilateral sanctions against Syria “will lead to nothing good.”

"We have always said that unilateral sanctions will lead to nothing good. This ruins the partnership approach to any crisis," Lavrov told reporters on the sidelines of a summit of ex-Soviet states in the Tajik capital Dushanbe. "We are against unilateral sanctions."

The European Union targeted three Syrian companies in an expanded sanctions list on Saturday, including a real estate bank, an investment group and a transport firm, the EU's Official Journal showed.

The sanctions mean that Europeans will be banned from doing business with the companies -- Real Estate Bank, Mada Transport and Cham Investment Group.

The sanctions on additional businesses in Syria are the latest in a string of speeches and decisions from European leaders on trade with the Syrian regime. French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday stated that France and its allies would do “everything legally possible” to isolate Assad and “ensure the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and democracy.” By Friday, European Union governments had agreed to ban imports of Syrian crude oil in a move to strengthen economic pressure on Assad and his government.

Four Syrian businessmen were also added to a list of people affected by EU asset freezes and travel bans.
