Turkish foreign minister to meet Syrian opposition on Sunday

Turkey condemned on Sunday attacks on its missions in Syria and in a diplomatic note called for a guarantee its diplomats in the country would be protected, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said.       

It said in a statement it had begun to evacuate the families of Turkish diplomats in Syria and called on Damascus to find and prosecute those behind the attacks on Saturday evening.         

Turkey has decided to evacuate the families of its diplomatic staff in Syria after protesters attacked its missions in the country but diplomatic staff will remain, broadcaster CNN Turk reported on Sunday.               

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu will meet members of the Syrian opposition in Ankara on Sunday, the foreign ministry said.   

The ministry said it was warning its citizens against non-essential travel in Syria due to the unrest there caused by the armed crackdown on eight months of pro-democracy demonstrations.

A crowd of around 1,000 attacked the Turkish embassy in Damascus on Saturday evening, throwing stones and bottles before Syrian police intervened to break up the protest, Turkey's state-run Anatolian news agency said.
