Pompeo meets Orthodox Patriarch in Istanbul

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his wife Suzan Pompeo paid a visit to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, spiritual leader of the world's Orthodox Christians on Tuesday (November 17).

Pompeo paid a short visit to Istanbul to meet with Ecumenical Patriarch of Bartholomew to discuss "religious issues in Turkey and the region and to promote our strong stance on religious freedom around the world," according to a statement by U.S. Department of State.

He was scheduled to meet Archbishop Paul Russell, Nuncio to Turkey and tour a mosque before winding up his visit.

The role of ecumenical patriarch holds the position of "primus inter pares" (first among equals) among leaders of the Orthodox Church, which counts millions of believers worldwide.
