Pope Francis arrives to Cyprus, meets Patriarch Rai
Pope Francis arrived to Cyprus on Thursday afternoon as part of his first stop of his visit to Cyprus and Greece, during which he will once again carry “the banner of defending immigrants and will stress on the importance of dialogue between Christian denominations.”

Cypriot authorities have described the two-day visit as “historic.”

During his visit, the Pope carries the slogan of “consolation in the faith” derived from the meaning of the name of Saint Barnabas of Cypriot nationality, which means “the comforter”.

The Pope met Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades at the Presidential Palace and then headed to the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of Graces in Nicosia, where he met Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rai.

In a speech delivered to officials of the Maronite Church, Pope Francis expressed “great concern” over the crisis in Lebanon.

“When I think of Lebanon, I am deeply concerned about the crisis it is facing, and I feel the suffering of a tired people afflicted with violence and pain,” he said.

“I carry in my prayers the desire for peace that emanates from the heart of that country,” Pope Francis added.
