There's A Mushroom Out There That Will Eat Your Plastic!
The Amazon rainforest is home to the most diverse animal and plant species out there, but recently a group from Yale University made the startling discovery of a fungus with a great appetite for plastic!

The fungi, Pestalotiopsis microspora, is the first anyone has found to survive on a steady diet of polyurethane (plastic) alone and--even more surprising--do this in an anaerobic (oxygen-free) environment that is close to the conditions found at the bottom of a landfill, the study said.

The Yale team published their findings in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiologylate.

In the future, our trash compactors may simply be giant fields of voracious fungi.

This is hopeful news during times when the many of us are extremely anxious about the wellbeing of the environment and global warming. Here’s hoping that the student’s findings will soon be put to use!
