[PHOTOS] Extremely Rare, Pregnant Mediterranean Monk Seal Dies On Lebanon’s Shore

WARNING: Images in the article are of a graphic nature.

In a new environmental catastrophe, fishermen in the region of al-Rawsheh caught an extremely rare and endangered Mediterranean Monk seal that was trapped in their fishing net.

The seal was brought ashore where she was found to be pregnant. A very disturbing photo then depicts the said fishermen holding the dead calf after it was cut out of its mother's womb.

Unconfirmed reports state that the mother was already dead when caught and the fishermen had attempted to save its calf through a c-section.

"I wish I hadn’t performed the autopsy, and I wish I hadn’t removed the dead fetus from inside the mother, perhaps I wouldn’t have felt such resentment towards the concerned ministries.

"Soon they will tell us that there are national interests more important than just a pregnant seal, but I tell them that we, as citizens, know best about what is more important to them.

"If you were aware of the importance of the seal in Lebanon, you would have done more to protect it [sic]," fisherman Nazih El-Rayyes said via his Facebook account.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Mediterranean Monk Seals are a critically endangered species of sea mammal that number at fewer than 600 remaining individuals.

More details as soon as they arrive.
