REPORT: 18 Lebanese survivors of Indonesian boat tragedy to leave Jakarta Saturday

24 Lebanese nationals are still awaiting their official documents in order to be able to return to Lebanon with the Lebanese delegation that headed to Indonesia on Wednesday.

Arrangements have been made for 18 survivors so far, however 6 others remain detained by the Indonesian authorities after failing to obtain residence permits.

Minister Ahmad Karami told LBCI that the 18 Lebanese survivors will leave Jakarta and head to Beirut on Saturday evening.

In this context, sources told LBCI that the Lebanese delegation held a meeting on Friday morning with the Indonesian defense minister, and is set to later hold talks with the Indonesia health minister.

This as medical sources from the Lebanese delegation reported that the coroner was allowed to access the military hospital in Indonesia in order to examine the bodies and carry out DNA tests.

On Friday September 26, dozens of Lebanese nationals hailing from the towns of Akkar were reported dead after a boat carrying them to Australia sank off the coast of Indonesia.

Preliminary information showed that an Iraqi national known as Abou Salah was in charge of transferring the persons to Indonesia before reaching Australia.
