REPORT: Patriarchs of the Orient call for the protection of Christians in the Middle East
A meeting for the patriarchs of the Orient was held on Wednesday in Bkerke with talks featuring high on the situation of Christians in the region as well as Lebanon’s presidential entitlement.

In addition to Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros Rai, the meeting was attended by other senior patriarchs.

The ambassadors of the United Nations Security Council's five permanent members also joined the talks.

Following the meeting, Bishop Boulos Sayyah read a statement on behalf of  the patriarchs of the Orient in which he called for supporting the Christian presence for the sake of the "coexistence between cultures in the region."

The statement also denounced the attacks taking place against Christians which are taking "a dangerous turn" that threaten them, mainly in Egypt, Syria and Iraq.

Sayyah voiced regrets over the absence of a stance for the Islamic authorities and the silence of the international community.

The statement called on the major International powers to protect the Christians in the Middle East region.

As for the presidential elections, Sayyah urged the Lebanese leaders to put their political disputes aside and to elect a new president for the country as soon as possible.

For his part, United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly stressed the importance of electing a new president.

He also noted that members of the Security Council are deploying their utmost efforts to put an end for the violence in Iraq.

Islamic State militants in Iraq have been waging a campaign against minorities in Iraq, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes.
