REPORT: Lebanon’s Health Minister says food safety campaign enhanced state’s position
Lebanon’s Health Minister Wael Abou Faour said the food safety campaign has stolen the limelight and enhanced the state's position, voicing satisfaction regarding the results the cabinet and himself have reached thus far.     

“I am proud that the government and I have given an acceptable example to protect the Lebanese citizen,” Abou Faour said in a press conference on Wednesday.        

“The food safety campaign has improved the state's position and proved that nothing is above the law,” he noted, saying “fewer ratio of food samples that do not meet health standards are being reported”.     

“Restaurants and other institutions have somewhat acquired a knowledge of the basic requirements for food safety,” the minister said.       

Commenting on attempts to tamper with the Health Ministry’s financial bills, Abou Faour said: “Some of the ministry's financial statements have been tampered with in order to cover up financial scandals.”        

Earlier on Wednesday, the minister said the country is in a state of total breakdown, stressing the need to declare a public health emergency.        

In this regard, he urged Speaker Nabih Berri to convene the parliament in a plenary session not only to tackle the food safety law but to also address the state of total breakdown which is conducive to issues like food corruption.      

In an interview with As-Safir newspaper, Abou Faour also asked Prime Minister Tammam Salam to call for an extraordinary cabinet session aimed to discuss the food safety dossier.
